how to care for your night guard

Ask about a custom mouth guard at your next visit! You've heard the reasons why to get a night guard, but how often do we talk about how to properly care for your night guard to keep it working for you for a long time? Here are some tips:

  • Always store your night guard in the case provided for you by your dental office. If you lose your case, contact your dentist office to get a new one.
  • Keep your night guard away from pets. All too often a pet is the reason for needing a new night guard!
  • Clean your night guard with a toothbrush and warm water after each use. You may want to soak the night guard in a denture cleaner such as “Polident” at least once a week to reduce stains, tartar, and odors.
  • If your bite feels uneven while wearing your night guard, call your dentist office and set up an appointment to have your night guard adjusted. Night guards that fit properly provide the best protection for your teeth.
  • Remember to bring your night guard to all your future dental appointments so it can be cleaned and adjusted if needed.

Grinding and clenching is a major cause of tooth loss. Frequently out patients are unaware of this nocturnal habit, but the damage done can be severe and require extensive rehabilitation. A customized guard (also called a splint or night guard) is an effective way to prevent damage to your teeth, jaw joints and muscles. Learn more at www.familydentisttree.com!
